I don't know what to think about Memorial Day. It's another sale day for retailers. It's supposed to be a day of remembrance for the military. It's hard to comprehend as conflicts around the world blend together into a continuous stream of death and destruction. The hotspots migrate from place to place. The United States involvement is murky in many cases. There's a whole category of conflicts that we participate in from afar. No soldiers in direct contact with our perceived enemies. Military action mediated through screens and robots. We spend billions to enable a remote fighting capability. How do we honor those who push the buttons and twist the joystick? The technicians and admins who maintain the system? The managers who make the call? What happens when we decide to enable autonomous systems. Who do we memorialize? Who do we hold accountable?
